Friday

The woman who used to have my position came to visit the office today. She brought everyone fresh fruit. This made me feel uncomfortable because I don’t bring people fresh fruit. Should I be bringing people fresh fruit? Is that tacitly understood to be part of the job? Come to think of it, Perky brings in cookies. By not bringing people fresh fruit or home-made cookies do I appear to be unable to perform the duties of my job or incapable of understanding these duties? Probably both. I hate this job.

Then there was the fact that Perky wailed at her ex-colleague "Come back! I miss you! Why don’t you work here anymore?! Whhhhhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyy?" While I understand Perky may have real emotions about this woman’s departure, must they be expressed 10 feet from me? And so loudly?

This is the real scam, not your phones. I have to assume that you are some sort of administrative assistant as I was one once, too. And then I was a COO so I now know both sides of the coin.

Have you noticed that only Assistants bring in treats - never any executives (and only women assistants at that). Can you imagine your COO bringing cupcakes to work? I did it to test the reaction and I was immediately infantilized. And - no - it was not all mental.

I decided that if I wanted to advance in the corporate world I couldn't pull any of that Admininstrative Assistant crap or I'd never get promoted. Executives give bonuses, not fresh fruit.

(Of course, in the end, I decided that I hated the corporate life about the same time I decided that I hated my Ex-B and so we have The Move which coincided with The Job Search so really, why listen to me?)
