I would never consider thinking that way about something like that. But since I don't live in NYC, I don't understand what the city's feelings towards it are -- can you clear that up for me, or at least someone here that is from NYC? I don't know how I would feel about the whole thing if it had happened in my state.
Sometimes talking about it helps you get control of your feelings. Even in the work place.
When I first found out what was happening I ran upstairs to tell my sleeping husband. He didnt believe me when I said I thought it was an act of terrorists. Then the second plane hit. I kept my young daughter out of school that day and held my infant son. We were living in the state of Washington. Very far away from New York. I know how I felt, but I am possitive its not even a fraction of feelings the folks felt in New York. My heart goes out to everyone.

Having spent 22 years in Mumbai, I have seen it bombed and I have witnessed communal rioting. Just two weeks ago the train system there was hit savagely.
If there is one thing I have learned from all this, as would have most people who saw or were affected by 9/11, is not to keep anything inside. Talking about any issue, no matter how bigoted, prejudiced or presumptious the opinion, at least everyone knows where the other stands. That in turn allows for educating the ignorant and stupid and healing the affected.
Obviously this guy (read ignorant ass) is waaay outside to know anything. Wonder what he analyzes anyway...

Okay, I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say something you'll all hate me for. While I do thing a statement like the one presented and later quoted by CB is just way bad, there is a grain of something I agree with in it.
It's probably because I live in Europe, but I get sick and tired of people talking about the 9/11, too HOLD IT! I AIN'T DONE YET! when that's the only tragedy they talk about. Like 9/11, as horrible and traumatic as it was, to everyone, is the only tragedy ever taken place. When in reality we have way too much bad happening all over the world.
So while saying something like the line CB quoted is just rude, unthoughtful and idiotic, without the context it's hard to say it was a bad opinion.

That is, when has the United States targeted civilians and other non-combatants as a strategy? When has the United States ever deliberately killed innocent men, women and children as a matter of policy? When has the US ever intentionally destroyed non-military targets?
Yes, civilians do get killed in war. But accidentally, because they are used as shields by those with whom we fight. Not because we seek to kill them. I'd like to see your data about the US use of terrorism. I really would.

I think the point is that we've heard SO much about 9/11. We're saturated. And America has used up the goodwill and sympathy it gained. It's now a case of maybe you should try having a bit of concern for and awareness of your country's actions in the rest of the world.

2. Nagasaki.

By the way, please don't bother with the "it was war" bit... Japan had already been defeated... Using the bomb was a purely political play... a matter of policy, if you will.
There is a great documentary called "Fog of War" on McNamara and Lemay's actions during WWII and subsequently in Vietnam where he freely admits that rationally, the entire US administration at the time should have been charged as war criminals, and hanged.
Of course, history is written by the victors.

In the past, we have made some mistakes. We blew it in Vietnam. We should have fought that war to win instead of leaving and letting the Communists win and put South Vietnamese in "re-eduation" camps. Thousands of S. Vietnamese were killed after we left. Vietnam is a perfect example of what happens when you let politicians fight a war instead of generals.
Then, of course, there was Cambodia and Pol Pot. Lovely, that.
We blew it with Cuba and the Bay of Pigs. We didn't back the invasion. If we had, Cuba might be free today instead of having suffered the past 45 years under castro. Thousands have died under his rule. The ones who are alive are miserable.
We did, however, get it partway right with Korea. At least South Korea isn't under the thumb of a brutal dictator. S. Koreans get enough to eat. They are not thrown into concentration camps where newborn babies are left to die. (Google it. I'm not making making this up.)
And we got it right in WWII. Let's see. We stopped Hitler. We stopped Mussolini. We allied with Stalin, which was necessary at the time, but as soon as we beat Germany, we should have taken care of Russia. Big mistake there.
As far as Japan, no, the war was not over in Japan. They had not surrendered and all indications were that they had no intention of surrendering. They were still fighting, so therefore, they had not been defeated.
The president and the generals had analyzed an invasion of the island and decided that it would cost too many American lives. They knew the Japanese would fight back to the death -- including the civilians. (Remember Iwo Jima? 6,825 US dead, almost 22,000 Japanese dead.)
The reason they had to drop TWO bombs was because Japan STILL DIDN'T SURRENDER after the FIRST ONE!
But, as you say, history is written by the victors. So tell me -- what would the world look like today if anyone the US has fought had won instead?

Truth is, The US is in an bad spot now because of it's post-war, cold war activities, not in spite of them.
