Last night I went to dinner with the entire family and wound up in the corner (no escape!) wedged between my father and my mother.
Making conversation during the main course, I told my mother about the Wednesday interview, concluding “I don’t really know if I want it…”
Her response was to purse her lips, stare at her salmon and say, somewhat hesitatingly, “But CB, it's better to get paid alot of money to work in a job you don't like than to get paid a little money to work in a job you don't like.”
Touché Mama.
About five minutes later, it was my father’s turn to hear the story of the interview. Having learned from my mother, I concluded “But it would be a lot more money than I have now, so if they gave it to me, I'd take it.”
His response was to look at me quizically and intone “No job is worth selling your soul.”
And that was a pretty good point too.
This story can illustrate one of three things:
- I was raised by two very different people, thus making me into the well-balanced woman you see before you
- I was raised by two very different people, thus making me into the slightly schizophrenic woman you see before you
- My parents are actually very similar in that they must contradict everything I say. (I mean, seriously, if I had told my mother I'd be taking the job it's quite possible she would have said "Remember what matters. Love. And joy. Not money.")

Sounds like we could be related. My parents would have aid the same tow very different things, and it would be accompanied by the lip pursing by my mom.
Good luck!
SHOW ME THE MONEY!
I have always opted for the money and it has always worked out fine. You usually end up selling your soul anyway, so you might as well get paid for it!
If you make enough money, you can always buy your soul back.
Whatever you do, remember that life always looks brighter when you're wearing new shoes.
It can only be number three ... which lead to the schizophrenic/balanced woman thing
But your mother is the right one. Your Dad would be right if there were a job on the block that you would love but paid less. If you are gonna hate your job it's definitely better to get paid more to do it.
Oh will you find yourself a sugar daddy already!! You're such a drama queen.
I agree with Jim. Go for the Money!
Just think of shopping on Fifth Avenue . . . with money in your pocket.
As long as you don't hate it, it'll be better than where you're at, right? Then again, this job might have an entirely different set of negatives.
Or you could keep looking. Tough one. Good luck.
lol... I wonder what would have happened if they heard each others' responses?
Just found your blog today and have loved reading your archives. I'm sort of in the same hell as you, so can totally relate to some things...except my boss is a woman. :) Great blog.
You could always improve your pay scale/perks package by becoming the current boss's next lust-muffin.
More money/lust-muffin. One step closer to a Beemer/seeing an old man naked on a regular basis.
The choice among these fine options is yours.
I think you just answered the question of why so many teenagers are oppositional...They learn it from their parents... :)
Naa, if our folks didn't disagree on things like mirrors, we'd never be able to think for ourselves.
i have an interview tomorrow. i'm scared sh*tless. even though it was confusing support... be glad you have support around you. i have.... a betty boop bobble head.
Love it!
Good old mom and dad...!
No. 2 ... enough said.
CB - I love your blog... it makes me laugh!!!
I've chosen "happiness" over "money" (I'm an artist....) and honestly, it's hard to be happy without enough income. Even so, I believe I AM happier working for myself...
What would you just LOVE to do?
P.S. Your parents ... hahahahahaha!
Your parents clearly need to contradict everything you say, but in a way that gets their message across too. Though said very differently, the thought they were both trying to convey is "Just make sure whatever decision you make won't result in us having to support your ass."
All jobs suck one way or another. You might as well get paid well so you don't have to focus on how little you get paid for your misery.
And you aren't selling your soul until you get into the seven digits. And even then, only if your job involves nuking innocents or pegging your jeans.
Just be thankful you have parents that aren't related.
You just can't win, can you?
