So fat!
It’s not that I don’t like to laugh at fat people. In fact, if someone said something funny about someone else being fat, I would probably laugh. But the fact of being fat alone isn’t funny. I don’t walk down the street, noticing all the chubby people and chuckling to myself. Aside from being mean, it would make no sense.
But I must be missing something because this morning my entire department is in hysterics over one person’s detailed story about seeing a fat person. “I saw a really fat person today. No, seriously, let me tell you how fat they were.”
At first I played along, but then I had to leave the area. It’s actually really difficult to fake-laugh for long periods of time.

Fake laughing hurts my face.
A colleague and I were in the (busy) lobby of our building and an extremely large woman entered.
He whispered to me "How does someone even get that big?"
I whispered back "Raisins."
We both busted out laughing.
The woman glared at us and I felt quite bad about it all later...but it was the whispered "raisins" part that was funny.
fat. HA!
amr--I would have laughed at "raisins."
amr, i would have lol'd at the 'raisins' comment too. it's because raisins are so small and inocuous.
Fake laughing gives you laugh lines that you really don't need.....
The funniest thing I've seen was a large friend of mine who slipped on some dog poop on the edge of the sidewalk and ended up sprawled out on his back in the gutter. I had a hard time to laughing my ass off as I helped him up and tried to act sympathetic.
Two weeks ago I watched a really fat guy try to ride his daughter's little pink bike, only to eat it out the pavement. Watching him pull himself up was reminiscent of a turtle trying to flip itself over. No fake laughs required.
Agree w/ you-- fat alone is not funny. Fat with a prop, though...

Fat jokes are midget jokes are mullet jokes.
There will always be a subset of people for whom the mere mention of any of the above elicits simpleton, pre-programmed laughter, while the rest of us scratch our heads and wonder if we missed the laughtrack sign (and the punchline, for that matter)
signed,
-the unfunny one
well, . “I saw a really blonde person today. No, seriously, let me tell you how blonde they were.”
is that funny?
how about this
. “I saw a really black person today. No, seriously, let me tell you how black they were.”
is that funny??
but its ok if its a fat person, they are less than human.
It's not that being fat/obese is funny per se...it's more like it's an oddity that amazes people into nervous laughter at times.
It's like "Wow, that is BIG!" or "How does skin stretch sooo much without breaking?"
Hahahah...sorry, nervous laughter.

they stopped "freak" shows at circuses for this reason, it was turning people who couldnt help it into sideshow attractions, how is it better to point and laugh at people who have feelings and lives like yours. than in the side shows..
"if you prick me do i not bleed", am i less because i happen to be fat, am i morally deficit, why is it right to abuse and insult one group over any other group. it wouldnt happen if it was an obvious things like skin colour, why is it ok for skin size?
Take a SlimFast "Fat Man". Blogs aren't about being effing politically correct so if you don't like it don't read it!
CB's not abusive/insulting to anyone including fat people. The thing about fat people is that they choose to put the food in their mouths and other people don't choose their skin color (with the exception of Michael Jackson) or handicaps.
I would have laughed at the raisins comment too.
Yes there are people who are just mean and I don't think that making fun of anyone is completely correct but the thing is that EVERYONE gets made fun of from the skinny model types (I just want to give her a sandwich) to the over obese ones (as mentioned in the raisin comment).
Physical appearance will always be a source of ridicule at one point or another.
The way I read it CB actually thought it was a bit disturbing that her colleagues were making such a uproar over someone just being fat.
as a cubby black woman I have to say that... raisins was funny..infact VERY funny. Just like if the conversation went
A colleague and I were in the (busy) lobby of our building and an extremely tanned woman entered.
He whispered to me "How does someone even get that dark?"
I whispered back "Sunscreen."
We both busted out laughing.
The "sunscreen" comment is funny not her hue.
Just like the first joke....her physical characteristic was initially met with wonder, awe even and it was the silly comment that made it funny.
RELAX fatman...these are the jokes.
it wasnt CB, it was the other commentors.
but jokes are one step to denigration and discrimination.
if it was any other group, like the disabled, race, then that would be bad. but fat people.. well.. thats ok they deserve to be poked fun at.
look at anonymous comment, its our fault, and its ok to poke fun at us.
what if i made a "joke" about your skin colour drena, how would you feel, we are as human as the rest of you, and we have feelings too, did you ever think that maybe these jokes upset fat people, i bet you didnt. and they wonder why so many over weight kill themselves, why they have more depression, its because we are routinely bullied and abused, and we have no reply to it.
try thinking how you would feel, to have so many jokes about them, to be the joke in hundreds of tv shows. (and before you say it i am just angry not upset) try to think what its like ok..
What IF someone made a joke about my color? Now that was funny... what IF....lmao
Seriously fat people. You are not funny simply because you are fat, we get it. I would, however, like to point out that people become morbidly obese on their own volition. How can we be expected to show self-restraint towards making fun of you if you can't show some to yourself when it comes to eating uncontrollably?
Dammit, look what you made me do, getting all serious up in here. Quick, somebody say poo!
Did you know reading Grant Miller Media actually makes fake-laughing much easier? You should try it!
Poo!! LOL
i think fat man is taking things way too personally.
yea, faking a laugh hurts my face too, esp the jaw :s
