Thursday

I had a blind-date/meeting with an editor last night. We had planned to have a drink and discuss the possibility of me doing a non-fiction book. This had sounded fairly basic at the time mostly because I neglected to take into account how nervous I would be about losing my blog anonymity virginity.

In actuality, things began to go wrong a full 24 hours in advance. At my company's good-bye party I almost cried when I hugged my boss, did tequila shots (who does tequila shots?!), literally held the hair back for another colleague who was vomiting into a trash can, and eventually left my good-bye party without saying good-bye, instead just kind of drunkenly ambling out the door and into a cab.

I woke up the day of the meeting with a massive hangover and a puffy face, completely terrified about introducing myself as CB. I needed to do my internet alter ego justice. How was I supposed to be witty when I could barely move off the couch?

Possibly still drunk, I decided with absolute certainty that getting a haircut would solve everything. (Weirdly, this is a decision I have made before. I am like one of those women who get drastic haircuts when going through a break-up but unfortunately, I need only minor set-backs to induce me to chop off all my hair. Inevitably, I wind up looking terrible and repeating an inner chant of "Long hair is good. Remember this.")

So at 6pm yesterday, I—hungover, puffy, with bad hair that was making me more nervous than I already had been—met the lovely editor.

I tried to hide it all—my nerves (and hangover) with a drink, my hair with a clip—but finally I leaned forward and said “I have to ask—you’re the first person I’ve ever met that only knows me through my blog. Am I anything like what you expected?”

She squirmed a little. “Umm…I don’t know….I hadn’t really expected anything in my mind, really…but…”

I nodded encouragingly.

“Well, you know,” she continued “I guess my friends were like ‘Do you think she’ll be as hot as she says she is’?”

“But I never even describe myself!” I protested. This was bad. I hadn’t even put on mascara.

“Well, there’s just something about the way you write that makes people think you’re going to be really gorgeous.”

Then there was a pause--possibly the most awkward pause I have ever experienced.

“I mean, I don’t know, you’re very nice looking…” she offered, giggling a little.

Oh boy.

All in all, the editor was very sweet and encouraging and it seemed like we might have had alot of fun together had I not been so nervous and strange. But I am never meeting anyone that knows me only through my blog again. I really can’t take the pressure.

similar circumstance:

got a dreamy job with only 1 meeting with one person then (unrelated) freaked out about my Ex who is still stalking me after TWO YEARS and so chopped off my hair and dyed parts of it hot pink. had our first group meeting for the job(with my new staff) last night and as i walked up the one guy i had met previously (the one who hired me) said, "i almost didnt recognize you, we thought you were one of the kids" (job is across from a performing arts high school)

*sheesh*

I think what this very funny/awkward moment comes down to is that, from you're writing you seem cool and maybe even popular (whatever form popularity takes in 20something new york). As we all learned in highschool, cool and popular = pretty.

Also you did have that one column about dressing up and getting into some exclusive club (I don't remember what) implying you are at least moderately attractive. However, I would say this perception of hotness says more about your readers then about you.

Personally, I always assumed you were attractive but not stunningly gorgeous or anything. In fact, sometimes I think I know you but then I think probably not.

Oh yes, and for whatever crazy reason people probably assume the blonde, buxom lady at the top of the page bears some resemblance to you - this is a silly assumption but I bet true.

Katie said...

OH yea, and if you do get a book, you should defnitely publish it under a ghost name. I think a big appeal of this column is wondering who you are and what you are really like, etc (as evidenced by the editor's inevitable dissapointment).

Anonymous said...

Of course you know she'll be reading this post, right?

Anonymous said...

This is hilarious but you do you realize that even if she thought you were gorgeous, she can't say "I think you're gorgeous." I mean, it just sounds like an awkward moment that had no reflection on your actual hotness.

marie said...

I am with anonymous above. Of course only you know how attractive you are, but I wouldn't take her comment as an indication that you were less than she expected.

DevilsHeaven said...

Surely you should after all your drinking that water = anti-hangover and cold compresses will reduce the puffiness?
How bad could your hair possibly have looked? Did you shave it or something?
I hate interviews.

Anonymous said...

I think the point is more that CB felt less than her best becasue she was nervous.

Alejandra said...

I really make little effort to hide my anonymity (post a pic, have full name, etc.). I'm a writer so I figure the exposure is good, but I still agree that meeting people in real life is scary. And this is no matter how many times we've emailed or chatted or read each other's blogs. People create an idea about you--it's inevitable. But I totally relate...

Anonymous said...

I myself assumed that you're probably pretty, mainly because there have been a few incidents eluding to the fact that may well be (one about some hipster telling you looked like Sienna Miller; another about how you're lucky that you're naturally pretty and this was a disadvantage because you never learned how to primp. or something?).

And I'm sure that you actually are pretty. She was probably just befuddled because NO ONE is actually how they come across on the internet, and so, although pretty, she probably just had different expectations. She probably imagined you as Jessica Cutler or something. I think SHE should be embarrassed.

Anonymous said...

SHE meaning the editor, not Jessica Cutler.

Princess of the Universe said...

I totally envisioned you looking like the girl up top of the page. That's one hot cartoon chick.

Heidi B said...

Did you tell her you were disappointed thinking she would be a much better looking potential boss?

Anonymous said...

People! I sincerely doubt the editor would mention CB's hotness level at all unless she was, indeed, hot. Otherwise that would just be unthinkably rude. You don't say to an unattractive girl, "Everyone thought you would be hot".

Sheila said...

Methinks 'Anonymous' is the blind date. And looking to see if you would talk about *her* today, but actually feeling she has to defend herself. LOL Congratulations for tipping the tables, CB.

And, for the record, I've never read anything here that would make me think you're gorgeous.

Anonymous said...

Sorry to say this---I like this blog a lot---but as far as its writer is concerned...Gorgeous? Probably not. Hungry for attention, and veiling all-too-thinly her attempts to boost her ego through this anonymous medium? Yep.
It's okay, a lot of bloggers seem to do it!

moe said...

I don't understand why some people seem to think the editor did anything bad...it was awkward funny moment--I am confused.

gotcha said...

Guys--I really liked the editor. She was cute--it's weird meeting someone you only know through their writing. This was just supposed to be funny, and maybe a little embarassing for me.

I do think it's funny that everyone is debating my hotness level now.

(my jealousy makes no effort to restrain itself/be less bitchy). that's really cool, i hope it continues to go well for you.

gotcha said...

@ anonymous who thinks I blog to boost my ego...

You obviously don't have a blog. People leave nasty comments and they get under your skin. (Clearly). I really have no idea how you could possibly think this would be a confidence-building excercise.

Anonymous said...

hey, is Moe re-boyfriend? fella made an identical comment only minutes before cb, and was also the first to post.

I'm the anonymous who left the comment about the editor expecting Jessica Cutler (NOT the ego-boosting anon). Just to clarify, it's not that the editor did anything evil, just that she was the one who made the original awkward comment and had to backpeddle, so in that situation she's probably the one who should be embarrassed in that situation.

Also, I think sometimes it's easy to forget that there are real people behind the blog, especially because it's anonymous, so it's easy to make two-dimensional comments, sometimes unwittingly inconsiderate comments, without thinking. Something that most of us wouldn't do outside of blog comments.

I know what you say is true and I do understand. I opened the comments on these posts. People are invited to say whatever they want, good or bad and, for the most part, I don't respond and I don't delete. But sometimes there is an assumption that is so wrong, I feel moved to correct it.

Okay, I'm done now.

I don't think she's coming back. Bummer.

But if there IS a book deal in the works, abandoning her blog will only kill the book before it hits the water, as this blog will most likely be the book's marketing vehicle.

Consumers have a short attention span, and by the time the book does come out, we'll all have forgotten about this blog, if is stays dead.

What is so ironic about this statement is that the disappearing act who authored this finally realized she needed a haitus in order to grow. Good for her. I was no great fan of the blog but I can certainly understand needing to take care of oneself.

Truly, were you a fan of this bloggers writing you might support her by even pretending to be half loyal.

Honestly, I'm trying to be harsh - but grow up, please.

"gypsy, you are an idiot."

Possibly (though unlikely in this case.)

I have the balls to critisize using a known indentity. You, on the other hand, should consider meeting Courage for hot date.

Anonymous said...

gypsy - wow, you're taking my comment awfully personally.

I don't think there was a huge amount of criticism in my comment, but it IS realistic.

And for someone who is no great fan of the blog ... and yet you're here reading 107 comments? Wow.

PS the anon who called you an idiot was not me. I can't be bothered to sign up for blogger, hence no identity. Otherwise I would not give two shits.

Gypsy said...

I realize the anon is probably not the same anon. No, I haven't read all the comments and yes, I'm not a great fan; however I have observed this blog from time to time over the past several years and wondered when it might mature - and frankly hoped this author would stop writing about how drunk she gets. I didn't feel I was taking your comment personally, though I can see why it might appear that way.

The fact is, this blog started stagnating. The author, if she's on some sort of haitus does herself a favor and likely will succeed having a book published with or without her 'fan base'; she has a knack for brining boring office people to life.

Anonymous said...

Oh, she'll no doubt have a book published since she is a talented writer, but that doesn't mean the book will sell, and that was my point. Book sales have a lot more to do with marketing than quality. Of course, if you have both elements present, your book will be an instant hit.

That's where a publishing company would use a blog as a hook, because the author becomes instantly recognizable and stands out from the pack. It also means guaranteed revenue from an established fanbase, which translates to less work for their marketing team.

That's all I was saying. I was musing out loud.

Gypsy said...

You make a few very smart points.

With that in mind she should probably deign to her fans for a few seconds.

guys, stop using the comments section on CB's blog to insult each other. it is petty and a waste of comment space. i'm sure when CB returns she'll be more delighted to read those comments hoping for her return, as opposed to those debating the maturity level of her blog and/or which anonymous commentor has more courage. grow up, y'all.

To the anonymous who posted before me: she's taken a leave of absence before. Once, she actually shut down the blog entirely, meaning that no one could even access it. She later explained that she was tired of negative comments and had considered abandoning her blog because of it.

I've always liked CBs blog. She's not perfect but no one is and she's one of the first to admit to her imperfections in very humorous ways.

I've never met CB, but if there were one person I don't know the real life name of that I'd like to meet, it'd be CB.

In general, the person who knows what's best for a person is that person themselves. So if CB is taking a break, for whatever length, it may well be the best.. for her. As far as I'm concerned, she did humanity a favour by revealing very intimate details about her life on a blog for strangers to read.

She touched this stranger's heart.

If she'd lost her password, she could post an anonymous comment telling us of her new blog due to the unfortunate tragedy.

So I think the reason is something other then that. I know that she once left because she was tired of the criticisms..

Personally, I wonder if the last comment she posted (this editor thing) has something to do with it. Maybe the editor never called her back for that book deal and she felt that she shouldn't say so much about her personal life to strangers?

Well, it was nice while it lasted anyway.

Ok, well an anonymous mentioned that why shouldn't we just email CB and see what's up. I've done so before when she shut down her blog; it seemed at the time that a select few -could- get in and I wanted to be one of those select few (apparently that was just an illusion).

This time, we can all see her blog but she's hasn't written in a long time and so I decided that another email would be a good idea. This is what I wrote:

"Just wanted to know how you were doing. If you don't respond, I'm fine
with that too.

Last I checked, there were 152 comments on your last blog entry,
including my own. If you never want to continue it again, I'm fine
with that. It was nice while it lasted. I can't deny that I'll miss
you, but that's just the way life is sometimes."

you know, she might have gotten a book deal for a subject unrelated to her blog, in which case she doesn't need us anymore.

triskit said...

If you're not going to write, at least close the fricken blog.

Scott said...

Anonymous: Did she ever really need us? All I feel fairly sure of is that she liked writing here for a while.. and maybe now, like a while ago, she no longer feels that way.

Scott said...

triskit, why close the blog? Maybe some would like to review what she's said in the past. And perhaps more likely, people are still finding her blog; I remember reading up a bit in this comment list and finding someone who had only recently found her.

Just because she wrote a while ago doesn't take away its beauty.

i was the anonymous who suggested someone e-mail her. let us know if she responds, yeah?

Airam said...

Just wanted to be 160. Seriously though, I hope you're ok.

Anonymous said...

Come back right now, young lady! (please??)

Anonymous said...

okay, those who are still commenting, help me do some guess work. is there a blog author from nyc who recently got engaged who insulted clinkny's blog?

i know something happened because clink wrote about it, but i kind of think that blog might be CB's new blog.

sleuth it out!

moe said...

Ooo! I don't think that's CB's new blog (I mean, are we really sure she has one? And engaged?!) but I totally want to know who that is too! I tried searching for it all over the place.

I want to know who insulted Clink! Clink's blog makes me crazy (not in a good way) and I think I'd really enjoy any blog that mocks her.

Anonymous said...

Keeping the guess work on...I think CB probably got a deal with some magazine to write a column feature about young woman's life in New York (Like "Jake in Glamour magazine"). probably the reason why she discontinued writing on her blog. Sad..I really enjoyed reading her blog *sigh*.

-- semi company-bitch.

bindress said...

If she had a new blog dont ya all think she would invite her most devoted readers? Duh!

Scott said...

moe, remember that she had recently moved in with her boyfriend when she had stopped writing her blog; she had written about the possibility of marrying him as well. I can easily believe that she's now engaged to him.

Anyway, I looked on clinkny's blog (http://clinkny.wordpress.com/) and didn't see any reference I'd take of as indicative of CB on a different blog. For those who don't know, CB once made reference to Clinkny in her blog (http://thecompanybitch.blogspot.com/2007/08/my-twenties-are-one-big-comparathon.html) and she says that she likes it.

Anonymous said...

alright peeps, but can you guys think of what blog clink is referring to? i want to read someone trash clink. she aggravates me in an unholy way.

not lisa said...

pinkindiaink(dot)blogspot(dot)com. Don't say I never did anything for you. And I really think the whole thing is just a misunderstanding... a big, fat, catty and totally entertaining high-school-esque misunderstanding that's been blown way out of proportion by a bunch of bored bloggies. And thank heavens for it - my work life has suffered since CB skipped out.

Anonymous said...

okay, well, it was a shot.

the magazine bid makes sense. i just hope i can figure what magazine it is.

Scott-

I can't decide whether I think your devotion is endearing or just creepy.

Scott said...

If I vote for endearing, will it sway the balance :-p? Rule#1: On the whole of it, am I harming or hurting? Answer that question and you have your answer.

Anonymous said...

i find it creepy as well. cute, but creepy. you aren't really helping or hurting...

My Aveline said...

Just plain creepy. Get a life, dude.

LS said...

Didn't there used to be an "update" or something at the end of this post? It seems like I remember reading it the first time and then after all the comments of everyone trashing the editor, CB wrote a note at the bottom saying she really did like the editor and that she had written this as a joke. Did I dream that? Anyone else remember it?

just me said...

I wish an editor would read MY blog.

...alas, I may have scared them all off with my shitty syntax.

Scott said...

LS: Well, in the blog post she does say that she felt that the editor was very sweet. As to her saying she had written this (the blog post I'm assuming), I never saw that, but maybe she put it up and then took it down.

anonymous: I like to think that I'm helping, but everyone is welcome to their view.

my aveline: I, like everyone else, have a life. I try to look at others in a positive light when possible, however.

gap said...

helping what, scott?

i feel like i'm watching a scene in a weird film noir; the psychologically gnarled man sits at his bedroom window counting screen holes with a needle, mumbling

poke, i cannnnn helllp...yes...yes...yes

poke,

Sheesh

Scott said...

So that would make you the woman who makes fun of the pscyhologically gnarled man then? Think about it.

Anonymous said...

ls- CB didn't update the post, she made 3 comments under the name gotcha. She does say she thought the editor was sweet, and that her post was just supposed to be funny, and show how she was embarrassed. Incidentally her last comments ends "okay, i'm done now."

LS said...

Thanks, anon! I knew I had read that somewhere. I guess I just had it fixed in my head that it was an update instead of a comment. That's what I get for not scrolling back through them...

Grind said...

At least she got something out of keeping a blog as interesting as hers around.

Good on CB for getting what she wants without resorting to sleaziness like some individuals.

Kareer Woman said...

Just browsing through blogs and came by yours, so glad I did, love it!

Anonymous said...

Wow, it's been 8 months since she blogged here.

Anonymous said...

i miss CB so much ...

Scott said...

I miss CB too.

Anonymous said...

I wonder if she will be back?
If she is writing a book do you all think it will be titled Company Bitch?
Bindress.

Scott said...

I wonder if I asked a really good psychic if they'd know the answer :-p. But really good psychics seem to be pretty expensive these days.

If she wrote a book, I'd definitely want to buy it, but right now I'd definitely settle for just one more blog entry. Reminds me of my niece; I was supposed to read her just 2 stories once; and she liked the 2 stories.. but she wanted another one.. and then another one.. by midnight, my sister said that thanks, she was going to sleep, I could leave now :-p.

Anonymous said...

Morbid, but CB could very well have passed away. If the creator dies, no one is able to add or take down the content. Just look at all of the MySpace pages that end up being permananet grieving spaces for the friends of people who have passed on.

I've seen nothing CB-like in any newspaper, magazine, or other blog.

Scott said...

You know, I don't think I ever thought of that possibility. I'm going to keep on hoping that CB is just taking a long break ;-).

Anonymous said...

holy shit, there are still people commenting here regularly? Well, add me to the list!

Face it guys - I don't think she liked the heavy criticism she sustained (she used to get pretty defensive), the embarrassment of our comments in her personal life (our badmouthing her possible editor) or the risk of having such a blog (she had many freak outs about being discovered, and deleted the blog at least twice).

She finally realized that it was unhealthy for her and ... quit.

Simple.

Good night!

Anonymous said...

Miss her!! =(
Maybe she´s waiting for 200 comments ... or not... snif.

kat said...

Yeah, I too still come back every so often to see who's still lurking around here (or if the Company Bitch has returned) -- but I'm pretty sure that if she were dead, one of her friends and/or her boyfriend, who knew about the blog, would have posted a comment to that effect. I think she's just given up blogging.

And we are all the Company Bitch now.

ÄsK AliCë said...

She should have posted a final post if she quit...Maybe she'll be back...

Anonymous said...

She got sidetracked by life. Or maybe she got a decent job and a decent boyfriend and life wasn't so bad, and she didn't have anything to bitch about anymore.

Anonymous said...

yeah, but you would think there would be a goodbye post? i'm guessing that ultimately the meeting with the editor went well and she's working on a book ... but she shouldn't just leave us hanging.

:(

Anonymous said...

Maybe she's dead. I mean, do you think she gave her password to someone and said, "Just in case I die"? I doubt it. So, for all we know, she's worm food. Eh, whatever. We already have "The Nanny Diaries" and "The Devil Wears Prada." Is "The Company Bitch" really that much of a stretch? Hardly.

Scott said...

Ok, maybe she's dead. Or maybe she's decided she just wants to watch the comments indefinitely. All I can say though is there will never be another company bitch. Atleast, not like this one.

Anyway, it's quite possible that her cb persona is gone forever. If so:

RIP CB. You were loved.

administrative slave said...

I'm a CB, too.

But not forever. It is enough to "kill" anyone.

Truly, this is legit and a decent way to make some extra cash.

Please, someone, anyone, bury the binary corpse already. Go and celebrate life, jump off the empire state building from a bungie cord with no panties on, with little lighters, flickers against the cold wind. The go get one of those greasy Denny's breakfasts, chat all night and go your seperate ways once and for all. The era is over. I can hear the mourners clear accross the continent all the way over here in California.
