Thursday

I had a blind-date/meeting with an editor last night. We had planned to have a drink and discuss the possibility of me doing a non-fiction book. This had sounded fairly basic at the time mostly because I neglected to take into account how nervous I would be about losing my blog anonymity virginity.

In actuality, things began to go wrong a full 24 hours in advance. At my company's good-bye party I almost cried when I hugged my boss, did tequila shots (who does tequila shots?!), literally held the hair back for another colleague who was vomiting into a trash can, and eventually left my good-bye party without saying good-bye, instead just kind of drunkenly ambling out the door and into a cab.

I woke up the day of the meeting with a massive hangover and a puffy face, completely terrified about introducing myself as CB. I needed to do my internet alter ego justice. How was I supposed to be witty when I could barely move off the couch?

Possibly still drunk, I decided with absolute certainty that getting a haircut would solve everything. (Weirdly, this is a decision I have made before. I am like one of those women who get drastic haircuts when going through a break-up but unfortunately, I need only minor set-backs to induce me to chop off all my hair. Inevitably, I wind up looking terrible and repeating an inner chant of "Long hair is good. Remember this.")

So at 6pm yesterday, I—hungover, puffy, with bad hair that was making me more nervous than I already had been—met the lovely editor.

I tried to hide it all—my nerves (and hangover) with a drink, my hair with a clip—but finally I leaned forward and said “I have to ask—you’re the first person I’ve ever met that only knows me through my blog. Am I anything like what you expected?”

She squirmed a little. “Umm…I don’t know….I hadn’t really expected anything in my mind, really…but…”

I nodded encouragingly.

“Well, you know,” she continued “I guess my friends were like ‘Do you think she’ll be as hot as she says she is’?”

“But I never even describe myself!” I protested. This was bad. I hadn’t even put on mascara.

“Well, there’s just something about the way you write that makes people think you’re going to be really gorgeous.”

Then there was a pause--possibly the most awkward pause I have ever experienced.

“I mean, I don’t know, you’re very nice looking…” she offered, giggling a little.

Oh boy.

All in all, the editor was very sweet and encouraging and it seemed like we might have had alot of fun together had I not been so nervous and strange. But I am never meeting anyone that knows me only through my blog again. I really can’t take the pressure.

I gave up my online anonymity from my previous blog, but not on purpose. It's really a small world, and I was freaked out by how many ppl in my social circle who tried to "discover" me. Now, I try to stay away from writing about aquaintances and men too specifically. the pressure is def too much... Anyway, good luck on your new endeavors!

Oh wow. Awkward for you, but it makes for fantastic reading! I'm totally not surprised that people want to hire you for your amazing writing abilities. :)

I'm apt to believe she's sick of her blog and is now reveling in how many people come in to comment about it. Think about it...great ego boost. I thought she might be dead, but I'm beginning to suspect not. Why? Well, I've had a couple of my prior comments deleted...only the author can do that. Company Bitch don't like me, that's fo sho.

Scott said...

I must admit it sounds reasonable to believe that she's still here if certain comments are being deleted. The only thing that seems certain is that she hasn't made any new comments since this editor one. In any case, I don't know about it being an ego boost (I don't think your comment sounds very ego boosting to me, for instance), but I could certainly believe that she looks at these comments from time to time.

Perhaps, as was Dirty Diamond, her blog was discovered by someone she didn't want discovering it. And perhaps the reason she doesn't delete her blog or not allow comments is because she has a little nostalgia for what was. I suppose we could theorize for quite a long time. All I know is that I miss her posts.

Its my first time on your blog, so I've gone back a few posts to get a feel for you... I give you an 8 maybe an 8.3

Scott said...

8 to 8.3 :-/? Perhaps if one day you read all her posts as I have, you'll upgrade the mark ;-).

I don't think anyone's perfect, but I think she's state of the art. She was definitely my favourite blogger. Virtually every time someone posts a comment I end up responding; I guess I want to hold on to the good times.

Vanessa said...

Is she dead? Seriously. I could use some closure.

Vanessa, I too would like to know what happened to CB. However, Sean Farley (one of the last posters) had this to say concerning that possibility:
"I've had a couple of my prior comments deleted...only the author can do that."

So apparently, at the very least until recently, she's still here (unless her site has been hijacked, but I think that's veering into the improbable). She just doesn't want to say anything more. I like to think that one day, when she realizes how many people don't want to let go of her blog, she may write again...

This is the last time im coming back to CB's blog with a faint hope that she will write again. Goodbye CB! I really enjoyed your writings. Wish you all the best. -n (india)

Yep.

maybe she answers.

She didn't answer me. I wrote her twice actually- this isn't the first time she closed shop; after I wrote her the first time, she didn't answer, but she opened up again; I like to think I might have had something to do with it.

This time, however, no go. You can find my second email by searching for 152 in the first 200 comments (I think my comment was the 153rd, I was telling her how many people had commented)

That Scott dude is freaky insane how much he checks this site and comments.

Or he's actually the Company Bitch. Either way, this blog is done

I am not 'freaky insane' and I'm not CB either. I just happened to really like CB's posts.

Either way, this blog is done

She may never post again and even the blog itself may get deleted one day; but CB will always hold a place in my heart.

hey, its my first time here. i'm now following your blog. x

Something isn't right. I've posted a comment or two here and they've been deleted. Only the author can delete them (or someone who knows the passwords to CBs blogsite). My past couple of comments were hurtful...I blatantly suggested that maybe CB died. Well, if she did, that's too bad. I enjoyed her blog. I only badmouthed it because I was jealous. Hopefully she's found success. Maybe a pending book deal or magazine column forbids her -- contractually -- from writing elsewhere for the time being. BUT, I find it hard to believe she would abandon it altogether without word. CB seems the type that would post a blog saying, "Hey guys, I'll have to take a leave for a while..." Oh well.

Emberella Cat said...

My hope is that she will tell us what her book is called when she publishes it (hint hint CB, if you do check these comments). I'd love to read more of her writing.

In case anyone still wonders, I just noticed that she is writing for wonderwall.msn.com. I just read some fluff about celebrity hair do's and don'ts written by her. Happy hunting.

Scott said...

In case anyone is wondering if Anonymous post has any validity, I sincerely doubt it. I went to the site he mentions and found no trace of the company bitch there. I'm guessing he or she was just joking around.

One of my "blog buddies" was in a serious accident, and has been in a coma for 3 months. Not sure if she will ever wake up. But her posts just stopped in their tracks, I guess nobody has a password, so her blog will stand "as is" until Blogger goes away.

But at least a couple of her friends in "real life" wrote an update on her accident and health status in the comment section, instead of letting blog readers speculate on what caused her departure.

I'm sure CB is fine, it's just kind of crappy that she probably reads this comment thread and still refuses to even put the "death rumors" to rest with a simple "I am not blogging anymore", or even taking this shit down. I am guessing she has left this up for future employers/agents to read and witness the undying devotion of her fans. Pretty weak.

The thing is, CB has always tried to keep this blog fairly private. Near the ending, though, word had apparently gotten out to one too many people. Perhaps this is why she no longer posts here. Perhaps she's created another alter ego and the 'tail' that she got here has been shaken off. Ofcourse, I think many of her loyal fans have been lost as well, but sometimes in life, you have to cut your losses.

While it would be good to know if CB is still amoung the living, I strongly dislike the idea of this blog being taken down. I read every single one of her blog entries and I wouldn't want to deprive anyone of being able to do the same.

I am guessing she has left this up for future employers/agents to read and witness the undying devotion of her fans. Pretty weak.

I strongly disagree. If she's decided to leave this blog up as a resume booster for potential employers/agents, that's fine with me. And if she published a book, I'd definitely want to buy it.

Anonymous, she may well never come back. I've never found a blog that caught my attention as hers did, but I did find some that held my attention for a bit; actually some people who commented on her blog. Alright, maybe I don't go blog searching all that often :-).

Oh, I thought I'd say that even though CB hasn't posted in quite some time, maybe she still checks the comments section.

Ok, this is getting super morbid. I stop by here maybe once every six months...just to see. I can't help but focus on the end of the last post:
"I mean, you're very nicelooking," she offered, giggling a little.
"Oh Boy."
She then goes on to say she's never meeting anyone again who knows her only through her blog. Maybe this was some psycho who faked being a book publisher to lure CB to a meeting, get to know her, and then murder her. I know, melodramatic, but stranger things have happened!

I discovered this blog while i was interning and had a little more time on my hands. I've been to NYC twice and I could certainly identify with many of her posts.

Great read, a pity CB appears to be gone for good(?) it's amazing how i stumbled upon this blog, more than 3 years after she stopped blogging.

Nonetheless, thanks for the read

And I wish you all the best :)
